Description
Belgium Catholicum seu Decem Provinciae 55 x 47 cm copperplate engraving, 60 x 51 cm sheet size, original and later hand colour, Nürnberg, 1747 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map from the firm of Homann Erben (Heirs), the leading German map publisher of the 18th century founded by the Imperial Geographer Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) and later managed by his sons and the noted astronomer Tobias Mayer (1723-1762), who is credited as the compiler of the map. Handsomely engraved and rich in detail, the map is notable for its fine presentations of regional armorial escutcheons as a title cartouche. The region covered extends from Utrecht in the north to Verdun in the south, and from Boulogne to Bonn west to east. While the outline and wash colour of the map is as published, the hand colour in the cartouche is by a later hand - Homann maps were coloured at time of publication but the cartouches were always issued uncoloured. However, many buyers of Homann atlases and "composite" atlases featuring maps from various cartographers and publishers preferred the more decorative and less austere look of a coloured cartouche and elected to have the cartouches coloured. The work on this example is skillfully and accurately executed, making for an exceptionally decorative map. Note that Mayer credits his compilation of the map from his "astronomical observation" as well as owing to his studies of the works of Cassini, Willebord Snellius and even Pieter van Musschenbroek!: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Brugge to Gent as seen below measures just 5 cm actual size: Rotterdam, Dordrecht and environs: Note tiny trees to indicate forests: Handsome mileage scales with ornate "frame": Condition - Please note carefully: Map is in overall very good condition as can be ascertained from photos, strong impression with distinct platemark, hand colour bold and vivid. Top margin has been expertly replaced with closely matching old paper just beyond upper neatline which is partially reinforced in manuscript. Map exhibits evidence of old repaired centrefold separation ~ 16 cm from bottom neatline, skillfully executed and not really noticeable other than faint vertical outline of reinforcement on verso. Some trivial marginal soiling, and map exhibits a minor diagonal crease near map centre left of centrefold. Overall a well preserved example of a scarce map that will that will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. Inquiries welcome and we encourage you to visit our other auctions on eBay.
