This is a copy of the extremely popular and coveted Neufchatel Bible. It was not published in England until 1799, when it was sold by all the book dealers there. Recommended by all the Bible societies of the day, this edition found its way into many homes in England and America. It was translated by Rev. Jean Frederic Ostervald, as a revision of the Geneva Bible, which was the Bible brought to the New World in 1620. It was also called the Neufchatel Bible. A copy of the Neufchatel Bible was owned by Lincoln's family and known as the "Lincoln Bible." Reference: Rev. Jean Frederic Ostervald, pastor of the Swiss Reform Church in Neufchatel, Switzerland, is responsible for this Bible. Living from 1663-1747, this Swiss Protestant pastor, was born at Neuchâtel in 1663 in a patrician family, son of a Reformed pastor. Educated in theology, he was ordained in 1683 and spent most of his life at Neuchâtel, becoming a pastor in 1699; he and two other ministers were later called the Swiss triumvirate. He favored dogmatics, exegesis, liturgy, hymnology, and moral theology. His writings both inspired and caused controversy. His influence was later called the Second Reformation. He died in 1747, having had a stroke while in the pulpit in 1746. While all his writings were all well-known among French Protestants, his Ostervald's Bible attained great popularity in Britain. (paraphrased/condensed from Wikipedia). According to Darlow & Moule #3814, this is "a second and more thorough revision by J.F. Ostervald. See No. 3793. Petavel states that the Pastors' Library at Neuchatel possesses Ostervald's copy of his first edition of 1724 (No. 3793), marked with all the corrections which he made for his final revision of 1744. Ostervald made use of the Hebrew and Greek, the Septuagint and the Vulgate, and French and German versions—both Protestant and Roman Catholic. His alterations tend chiefly to modernize the language, but they sometimes also affect the sense. Engraved frontispiece, and portrait of Ostervald....with maps, etc....another copy, without the engraved frontispiece, portrait, and maps. In two volumes."       SHIPPING: High bidder pays $19.95 shipping and secure packaging for all 50 US States and Territories. Additional overseas fee apply.
