Survey'd by Capt. Abel Tasman & depicted by Order of the East India Company in Holland in the Stadt House in Amsterdam click image to enlarge click image to enlarge click image to enlarge This important map is the first of Australia engraved by an Englishman - Emmanuel Bowen - and was published in the 1744 edition of John Harris' Complete Collection of Voyages. Bowen, one of the leading print-sellers and engravers, copied Thevenot's map showing Dutch discoveries up to 1644 and included two long legends. The text includes reference to 'the best climate in the world', 'according to Coll. Purry'. Purry was a former employee of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) interested in attracting the Dutch, French and English to settle in Nuyts' land—the text on the map claimed the best climate as being between 35° north and south of the equator. Bowen has added the Tropic of Capricorn and two texts: the upper block emphasises that no assumptions have been made, so white space abounds between New Guinea and Carpentaria, and between the mainland, Tasmania and New Zealand; the lower text starts 'It is impossible to conceive a Country that promises fairer from its situation, than this of Terra Australia; no longer incognita, as this map demonstrates. He had plans for completing a major County Atlas but, finding the task beyond his means, joined with Thomas Kitchin to publish “The Large English Atlas”. Many of the maps were issued individually from 1749 onwards and the whole atlas was not finally completed until 1760. With one or two exceptions they were the largest maps of the counties to appear up to that time (27” x 20”) and were unusual in that blank areas around each map are filled with historical and topographical detail which makes fascinating and amusing reading. The atlas was reissued later in reduced size. Apart from his county maps and atlases of different parts of the world he also issued (with John Owen) a book of road maps based, as was usual at that time, on Ogilby but again incorporating his own style of historical and heraldic detail. Thomas helped his father during his lifetime and produced many fine maps in his own right after his fathers death    Payment Methods Visa MasterCard Bankcard *PayPal Direct Bank Transfers & AUS$ Bank Drafts Please contact me to discuss other forms of payment Please also contact me before the end of the auction if you would like to discuss payment by instalments over an agreed period *(Please email your CC#, Expiry Date, full name on card & shipping address in two separate emails or alternatively you can fax or phone to the numbers below.)Australian buyers please add 10% GST    Shipping WorldwideAustralia Air Mail Courier1 Courier2* Express Insurance $10.00 US $30.00 US N/A   2.75% min $6.00 US       $6.00 US 2.75% min $4.00 US There will be only one shipping charge per 10 maps or prints purchased.
