Description
Current Lot Twelve George II Silver Plates, London 1720 A classically elegant service of Georgian plates with "Tudor Rose" outline and gadroon borders, with estate engraving suggesting they were part of an extensive service. The hallmarks are mostly rubbed, but one clearly shows marks for London, 1720, with a maker's mark, clear on each, that closely resembles that of John Bache. Each has the heavy guage and high-quality associated with early Georgian silver, together with some evidence of possible reshaping during the later 18th Century into their present form, including engraved Royal armorials on the verso with initials "G.R.". The design conforms more to the fashion of the later Georgian period than the earlier. Reshaping was a common practice among Georgian silversmiths, due to changing tastes and the high cost of silver as a raw material. Diameter 9 1/2". Total weight 226.72.
