This is a foundation map of North America due in no small part to the correction to detail in the interior of the country. The Great Lakes are based on Coronelli showing the French strong point at Tadousac, Quebec, Fort Sorel, Montreal & Fort Frontenac. The English settlements are confined to the east of the Alleghenies, with Fort and River Kinibeki as the border between New England and Arcadia. The Mississippi valley are is well developed with recent French settlement of d'Iberville at Bilochy and the forts at Bon Secours and St Louis.  The map also corrects the error of the western swing of the lower part of the Mississippi River, moving its mouth to essentially its correct position on the Gulf of Mexico.De l'Isle has also corrected longitude positions and was the first to revert to a peninsular form for California. He stops his western coast at Cape Mendocin and is the first map to show the Saragossa Sea.The map also illustrates the routes of explorers such as Cortez, Drake, D'Olivier, Gaeten and Mendana, and indicates the locates of a number of Indian tribes, including the Apaches. Such was the improvement of this map, and the sterling reputation of Delisle, that within a few years other publishers issued their own copies of the map, which continued to appear as the 1780s. The importance of this map cannot be overstated in the progression of American cartography.  (Ref: M&B; Tooley)    Please note all items auctioned are genuine, we do not sell reproductions. Like Nicholas Sanson , Claude Delisle (the father) was a geographer and historian and has four sons, all of whom made their mark at the time, but Guillaume his eldest son, was the most remarkable member of the family. Said to have drawn his first map at the age of nine he was elected a member of the Academie Royale des Sciences by the time he was twenty-seven; later he was appointed to the highest honor as ` Premier Geographe du Roi’. In 1700 Guillaume Delisle published the renowned “Atlas de Geographie”, which was reissued in 1707, 1708 and 1718. Between 1730 and 1774 the atlas was again reissued as Atlas Nouveau by Covens and Mortier, Amsterdam    Payment Methods Visa MasterCard Bankcard *PayPal Direct Bank Transfers & AUS$ Bank Drafts Please contact me to discuss other forms of payment Please also contact me before the end of the auction if you would like to discuss payment by instalments over an agreed period *(Please email your CC#, Expiry Date, full name on card & shipping address in two separate emails or alternatively you can fax or phone to the numbers below.)Australian buyers please add 10% GST    Shipping WorldwideAustralia Air Mail Courier1 Courier2* Express Insurance $10.00 US $30.00 US $12.00 US   2.75% min $6.00 US       $5.00 US 2.75% min $4.00 US *Courier #2: Available for all items 11in x 8 1/2in (280mm x 215mm) or smaller flat or folded along original folds There will be only one shipping charge per 10 maps or prints purchased.
