Description
Principatus Transilvania 57 x 49 cm copperplate engraving, 60 x 52 cm sheet size, original and later hand colour, Nürnberg, 1716 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of the postal routes and postal offices of France by the firm established by Imperial Geographer Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) that came to be the leading German map publishing firm of the 18th century.  Homann's title is somewhat misleading in that he was a master engraver whose maps were rarely original but were in fact close copies of earlier maps, usually French or Dutch.  This map is a case in point - it is a close copy of the 1691 map "Principaute de Transylvanie Divisée en Cinq Nations.." published by the prolific Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) which in turn was derived from the 1686 map compiled by the Italian geographer Giacomo Cantelli di Vignola (1643-1695) "La Transilvania Divisa...sue Cinque Nationi...".  The cartography is essentially identical to the Italian map but here Homann employs Latin in the title cartouche and regional names in lieu of the original Italian.  And of course Homann in a sense has "improved" the map with his superb engraving work and the addition of a flamboyant martial cartouche.  A somewhat uncommon map, Homann's version here preserves Cantelli di Vignola's snapshot of the region immediately after the defeat of the Ottomans at Vienna as the Habsburgs began to consolidate power in Transylvania.   A fine martial cartouche, probably engraved by Homann himself: Some city names are given in German form, e.g. Hermanstadt for Sibiu - note fortifications there and at Alba Iulia: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Groswardein (now Oradea) to Clausenburg (now Cluj-Napoca) as seen in the photo below measures just 13 cm actual size: Timisoara (Temesvar) and environs - note pictorial topography, tiny "trees": Map shows Brazov (Cronstadt) as the principal city of "Burzenland": Condition - Please note carefully:   Map is in overall good condition as can be ascertained from photos, strong impression with distinct platemark, hand colour bold and vivid.  The map exhibits evidence of partial separation at centrefold and reattachment on verso with a few letters of town names directly on centrefold truncated - the detail photo showing the Alba Iulia region clearly shows the appearance on this section of centrefold, which extends ~ 20 cm into map from lower neatline before terminating.  Top margin has been replaced to neatline with closely matching old paper, scarcely noticeable.  In all a handsome example of a somewhat scarce map will make an elegant presentation if matted to the neatline and framed.  Inquiries welcome and we encourage you to visit our other auctions on eBay.
