This map of Moscovy, Poland, Little Tartary, and ye Black Sea &c. is most Humbly Dedicated by H. Moll Geographer click image to enlarge click image to enlarge click image to enlarge This very large finely engraved, hand coloured original antique map of Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Central Europe and the Black Sea region - with a very elaborately engraved dedication to Alexander The Great - by Herman Moll was published by John Bowles of London in ca 1715. This is a wonderful example of an early 18th century large-scale map of Russia and the eastern European countries, including all of Poland and Lithuania stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea. The large cartouche is an elaborate homage to Peter the Great, whose portrait is contained within. Moll in a note states that the map was based directly on Russian sources: The greatest Part of this Map relating to Russia is done by the Czar’s order, according to ye Actual Surveys of Cornelius Cruis His Czarrish Majesty’s Vice Admiral...” The aforementioned Cruis (Cornelius Cruys), along with John Thesing, who is also cited as a source for the map, were recruited by Peter the Great during his trip to the Netherlands, during which he sought military and naval experts. Cruys was made Vice Admiral in Peter’s yet to be created navy and conducted important nautical surveys, notably in the Black Sea area and on the River Don. It is scarcely necessary to look at a map of Russia - with which we must include Siberia - to visualize the daunting task facing Russian map makers. Indeed, considering the vastness of their territory and the lack of skilled cartographers, it is surprising that relatively good maps were available for engraving and printing in most of the well known sixteenth and seventeenth century atlases. Generally, maps of that time were based on material brought back from Moscow by visitors from the West. In the 18th century many large-scale maps were published by the likes of John Senex and Herman Moll, this trend continued until the end of private mapping in the early 19th century when it was replaced by Ordnance Survey maps. His prolific output covered a wide range of loose maps of all parts of the world, varying from miniatures to very decorative large maps and atlases. His work enjoyed a high reputation and much of it was copied by other publishers, a fact of which he was always very conscious.    Payment Methods Visa MasterCard Bankcard *PayPal Direct Bank Transfers & AUS$ Bank Drafts Please contact me to discuss other forms of payment Please also contact me before the end of the auction if you would like to discuss payment by instalments over an agreed period *(Please email your CC#, Expiry Date, full name on card & shipping address in two separate emails or alternatively you can fax or phone to the numbers below.)Australian buyers please add 10% GST    Shipping WorldwideAustralia Air Mail Courier1 Courier2* Express Insurance N/A $35.00 US N/A   2.75% min $6.00 US       $8.00 US 2.75% min $4.00 US *Courier #2: Available for all items 11in x 8 1/2in (280mm x 215mm) or smaller flat or folded along original folds Airmail shipping from Australia to Europe or the US takes approx. 5-7 days.
