Visscher click image to enlarge click image to enlarge click image to enlarge This beautifully engraved hand coloured original antique Twin Hemisphere World is the second state of the 2nd world map published by Nicolas Visscher in 1677. The first state of this world map was published in 1663.This map can be distinguished as the 2nd state by the small print below the title recording the grant of publication privilege for 15 years. This map is cartographically conservative, with certain areas such as California, shown as a peninsular, being represented more correctly than current theories at the time. Korea is still shown as an Island with most of the NW of America shown in extended form. New Guinea, Australia and Van Diemens land are marked, but not the north coast of Australia recently charted by Abel Tasman during his second voyage in 1644. The four continents are shown in allegorical form - in the four corners - with examples of their animal life and inhabitants. Two circular diagrams at the top and bottom of the map depict the movement of Sun, moon and planet in the heavens. Please note this is an original Nicolas Visscher Twin Hemisphere World map and not a later reissue by Daniel Stoopendaal that were released after 1680. (Ref: Shirley; Tooley) Please note all items auctioned are genuine, we do not sell reproductions. A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) can be issued on request. Visscher 1587-1652 - Nicolas Visscher I (son) 1618-79 Nicolas Visscher II (grandson) 1649-1702 For nearly a century the members of the Visscher family were important art dealers and map publishers in Amsterdam. The founder of the business, C. J. Visscher, had premises near to those of Pieter van den Keere and Jodocus Hondius whose pupil he may have been. From about 1620 he designed a number of individual maps, including one of the British Isles, but his first atlas consisted of maps printed from plates bought from van den Keere and issued as they stood with some additions of his own, including historical scenes of battles and sieges for which he had a high reputation. Some maps bear the latinized form of the family name: Piscator. After Visscher's death his son and grandson, both of the same name, issued a considerable number of atlases, constantly revised and brought up to date but most of them lacking an index and with varying contents. The widow of Nicholaes Visscher II carried on the business until it finally passed into the hands of Pieter Schenk Payment Methods Visa MasterCard Bankcard *PayPal Direct Bank Transfers & AUS$ Bank Drafts Please contact me to discuss other forms of payment Please also contact me before the end of the auction if you would like to discuss payment by instalments over an agreed period *(Please email your CC#, Expiry Date, full name on card & shipping address in two separate emails or alternatively you can fax or phone to the numbers below.)Australian buyers please add 10% GST Shipping WorldwideAustralia Air Mail Courier1 Courier2* Express Insurance $10.00 US $30.00 US $12.00 US 2.75% min $6.00 US $6.00 US 2.75% min $4.00 US *Courier #2: Available for all items 11in x 8 1/2in (280mm x 215mm) or smaller flat or folded along original folds Airmail shipping from Australia to Europe or the US takes approx. 5-7 days.
