This is the standard 17th century picture of the Turkish Empire. Most of the place names on this map are derived from maps published in 1561 by the Italian Map-Maker Giacomo Gastaldi, who's maps exercised great influence over later European mapmakers even throughout the 17th century.Formidable though the barrier presented by the Turkish Empire in the near east was, by the early years of the 17th century it was beginning to show signs of decadence and weakness, especially after the defeat of the Turkish navy at the hands of the combined Christian forces of Western Europe at the Battle of Laepanto in 1571, from which Turkish naval power never recovered. Centred on the palace of the Sultans at Constantinople the administration of the empire was passed down through local rulers the beys, deys & pashas who never lost an opportunity to enrich themselves and to develop often considerable powers of their own.Further defeats of the Turks in 1669 when Crete was taken by the Venetians and in 1683 when they suffered a humiliating defeat outside Wein at the NW extremity of European Turkey. The individual maps are the best known and among the most sought-after of all county maps. The maps themselves were derived from the best and most up-to-date sources available; however, Speed did make innovations- introducing town plans on many of his maps, he included county boundaries on almost all maps, also the coats of arms of local Earls and Dukes and the Royal arms. The overall effect is to produce very decorative, attractive and informative maps.Speed also produced the first world atlas by an Englishman, entitled The Prospect of the most Famous Parts of the World (1627). The maps are famous for their bordering panels of national characters in local costume and panoramic views depicting the areas major towns and cities. In addition to the obvious decorative quality of the maps, regular atlas copies have two pages of English text printed on the reverse, giving a charming description of life in the early seventeenth century of the area shown.
