S. Ano. 1626 click image to enlarge click image to enlarge click image to enlarge click image to enlarge This finely engraved original antique map - with beautiful original hand colour - of early America was engraved in 1626 - the date is published in the title cartouche - and was published by Thomas Basset & Richard Chiswell in the 1676 edition of John Speeds  A Prospect of The Most Famous Parts of The world.  This is a truly wonderful early map, the paper is thick and stable, heavy plate-mark, beautiful original hand colour and unusually for Speed maps generous margins. The text on the verso of this map is written in English explaining all known detail of the New World at the time. This desirable map is the first published in an atlas to depict California as an Island, and the first with an accurate attention to the east coast of North America, particularly between Chesapeake Bay and Cape Cod. The fledgling colonies of Plymouth in New England and James Citti in Virginia are also recognised. The two sides of the map illustrate the natives of the continent, the left side bearing the peoples of the north and the right the south. Despite the maps obvious attention to the English presence in North America, none of the eight towns represented in the top view are from that region. This was due to the lack of available views on which to draw from at the time.  California as an Island was first depicted by the engraver of this map Dutchman Abraham Goos in 1624. There is speculation that a map of North America showing California as an Island dated 1625 by Henry Briggs may have been possibly engraved a couple of years earlier, but this is speculation. The individual maps are the best known and among the most sought-after of all county maps. The maps themselves were derived from the best and most up-to-date sources available; however, Speed did make innovations- introducing town plans on many of his maps, he included county boundaries on almost all maps, also the coats of arms of local Earls and Dukes and the Royal arms. The overall effect is to produce very decorative, attractive and informative maps. Speed also produced the first world atlas by an Englishman, entitled The Prospect of the most Famous Parts of the World (1627). The maps are famous for their bordering panels of national characters in local costume and panoramic views depicting the areas major towns and cities. In addition to the obvious decorative quality of the maps, regular atlas copies have two pages of English text printed on the reverse, giving a charming description of life in the early seventeenth century of the area shown.    Payment Methods Visa MasterCard Bankcard * PayPal Direct Bank Transfers & AUS$ Bank Drafts Please contact me to discuss other forms of payment Please also contact me before the end of the auction if you would like to discuss payment by instalments over an agreed period *(Please email your CC#, Expiry Date, full name on card & shipping address in two separate emails or alternatively you can fax or phone to the numbers below.)
