Description
Current Lot Empire ormulu mounted mahogany secretaire a abattant circa 1810, attributed to françois-honoré-georges jacob-desmalter The grey veined rectangular marble top, above a single drawer, flanked by caryatids, the drawer removing to reveal hidden compartments to the left and right, the fall front opening to reveal an interior fitted with drawers and pigeonholes, surrounded by a central archway and numerous hidden compartments within; the two cupboard doors opening to an interior with a shelf and a drawer, raised on leaf carved green painted paw feet. NOTE: François-Honoré-Georges Jacob Desmalter (1770-1841) belonged to a dynasty of leading cabinet-makers and was the son of the most celebrated seat furniture maker Georges Jacob. During the Empire period the firm was recognized as one of, perhaps the finest in Paris and in 1807 employed 350 workmen. H: 55 1/2, W: 39, D: 17 3/4 in.
