The Bible, that is, the Holy Scriptures conteined in the Old and New Testament. Translated according to the Ebrew and Greeke, and conferred with the best translations in divers languages. With most profitable annotations upon all the hard places and other things of great importance. Imprinted at London by Christopher Barker, Printer to the Queens most excellent majesty 1579. This is Herbert 159, the first in a long series of Quartos printed in England. This edition does not contain the apocrypha which indicates it was originally owned by a Puritan or Pilgrim. Lacks all the opening preliminaries including the general title. Starts with the first page of Genesis. It has some marginal loss just affecting the notes but not the Scripture text, and the next leaf is a bit rough(both with some creasing). It gets much better after a few pages and stays fairly free of browning(and quite nice) until the New Testament(though there is not much there). There are the tables following the New Testament with the Psalms in Metre printed by John Daye at the rear ending on Psalm 138. These Psalters(Psalms set to English Metre) were placed in the backs of Bibles in that day and were used to sing from. With good margins throughout. There are soe previous owner prescriptions dating 1664, 1734, 1798 and 1813. The binding is the original with a central gilt stamped motif on each board and faint blindstamping with remains of clasps. The spine has five raised bands with the remains of giltstamping in each compartment. The boards have been strengthened. A rare offering. 7/08 Rare/Religion/Theology.
