Description
1300lbs. Copper coated cast iron bathysphere, 56" diameter. Cast Iron, Glass, Steel, PVC, rubber hose, 120" air pump, steel gantry and hoist. Shown in photos at New York city art Gallery, ART ET INDUSTRIE, 52 Thompson Street. (Soho) May 1998. This piece of art was created at the kohler plumbing fixture factory in Wisconsin where I was fortunate to be the recipient of the highly coveted and prestigious John Michael Kohler Arts Center's - Arts/Industry residency. Very few Casting facilities are capable of casting such a large art piece; at the time this art work was created ('98) the cost of fabrication was $40,000. I recreate historically recognizable objects and or devices. (This piece is a close replica of the first bathysphere, which was devised by Otis Barton in 1928.) I shift the context in which these objects and their intrinsic history are usually viewed and give them titles that point the viewer toward a new narrative. While it would be wonderful if an art collector would display this piece as I intended. I also imagine this art work could be displayed at a maritime museum, public aquarium or any nautical or aquatic themed business including a restaurant. Shipping NOT included in auction I will help coordinate shipping, at cost. (Fits on over sized Pallet) If required, I am capable of installing almost anywhere in the world Installation is not included in auction but I will give instructions as requested Sale is final and payment must be received in full before shipping
