Description
Current Lot Fine pair of Regency boulle inlaid rosewood and mahogany teapoys circa 1815, attributed to louis le gaigneur In premiere and contrapartie, the first example fitted as a tea caddy, the other fitted for sewing; each rectangular hinged top inlaid with opposing chinoiserie panels, one opening to an arrangement of four mahogany canisters centered by two inserts for mixing bowls, the other opening to an arrangement of compartments, the sides inlaid to match, raised upon fluted and leaf carved standard and two tier plinth inlaid with foliate scrolls raised on downswept legs and leaf cast gilt bronze capped casters.NOTE: The brass inlay on the present lot bears similarities to other examples produced in the London workshop of Le Gaigneur. Located on Queen Street in Covent Garden, Le Gaigneur's 'Buhl Manufactury' specialized in brass inlaid furniture of high quality deriving its inspiration in the designs of Jean Berain and Andre Charles Boulle. H: 31, W: 18, D: 12 3/4 in. PROVENANCE: Acquired by the present owner in these rooms, December 16th, 1970, lot 483, from the sale of the Estate of John G. Johnson, Philadelphia. These teapoys were originally part of the furnishings of Mr. Johnson's home at 531 S. Broad Street. The bequest of the Johnson Collection of paintings and decorative arts to the Philadelphia Museum of Art remains one that Institution's largest single gifts.
