Description
Current Lot SCRIMSHAW SWIFT - Mid 19th c. American, whalebone and whale ivory scrimshaw swift with red polychrome decoration. Swift has a turned whale ivory clamp with lower section turned in form of a barrel with several scribed bands filled with red ink. The whale ivory set screw at base of clamp is turned with scribed red bands, base has a fluted section of whale ivory and is sandwiched between two V grooved whale ivory discs which look like pie crimper wheels. The top and bottom of cage is whale ivory and has red scribe lines, main shaft is whalebone as is the stays, retains original whale ivory cup finial. 25" high, excellent condition, mellow age patina, set screw for sliding clamp replaced.
