Illustrated with a map of Kentucky showing the routes of Walker and Gist through the state, with a view of Castle Hill, the residence of Doctor Walker, and a likeness of Colonel Johnston]. Louisville - Kentucky, John P. Morton and Company - Printers of the Filson Club, 1898. Frontispice-portrait, titlepage, xix, 222 pages, (6) p.(list of Filson-Club Publications); 1 plate showing 'Castle Hill, Albemarle County, Virginia, 1765, Home of Doctor Thomas Walker' and 1 wholepage map in which the routes of Walker and Gist have been relined with red ballpen. Red/Brown half-morocco binding with 5 raised bands and goldstamped title at spine, strong creme-coloured papercovered boards and leather corners; Folio (ca. 30 x 25 cm). 1st complete edition and rarest volume of the 'Filson Club Publications'(No. 13). The original of Thomas Walker's journal has remained in the hands of his descendants. Its existence was known to certain early historians, who mentioned it but apparently had no copy of it nor any definite idea of ist contents. In the course of time two portions of the journal became detached and were for a time lost. Those lost portions covered the first ten days of the journey from March 6 to March 16, and another period of ten days from April 11 to the middle of the entry of April 19. In 1888 the journal, excepting the missing portions above referred to, was published by Walker's descendant, William Cabell Rives, under the following title: "Journal of Exploration in the Spring of the Year 1750 by Dr. Thomas Walker, of Virginia, with a preface by William Cabell Rives, L.L. B., member of the American Historical Association. Boston Brown and Company 1888." In 1894 Colonel J. Stoddard Johnston wrote a paper for the Filson Club containing a copy of the journal as published by Mr. Rives, accompanied by a map showing Walker's route, according to the view of Colonel Johnston, and the location of the house built by his party on the Cumberland River, respecting which Col. Johnston says that it "always heretofore had been laid down the early maps as due south of Louisville more than one hundred miles to far west." Col. Johnston then made an effort to find the missing sheets of the journal. After correspondence with Dr. William C. Rives, son of the William Cabell Rives who had published parts of the journal, as above indicated, the missing portions were recovered through search among some of the family papers long laid away. In 1898 Col. Johnston contributed to the Filson Club publications his notable work, "first Explorations of Kentucky," in which he publishes verbatim the entire journal, and to him is due the credit of having given to the world the first printed copy in full of this most interesting and valuable document, and from that publication the copy below is taken.
