TAPESTRY DescriptionThis is a large border panel of beautiful antique French hand woven tapestry possibly Aubusson, in wool, dating from about 1890-1900. It is far more beautiful than the photos, being more like the closeups in colour, as it was photographed on a bit of a dull day.It is has been hand woven in wool on a strong cotton warp, with gold metal thread detail. It must have once been the top or bottom border of a large tapestry. The design is very strong, with beautiful colours, it has an Arts & Crafts flavour with the intertwining strapwork motifs reminiscent of celtic design, whilst being typically Victorian in colour and pattern. It has a small remnant of its silk lining still attached at either end. There are quite a few little slits, but these are called 'sewings' not damage, just the appearence of an authentic hand-woven tapestry, where the colour of wool was changed. These slits were either left, or sewn up by the tapestry-maker once the piece had been cut from the loom, hence their name 'sewings'. It looks as though this panel has lost some of the stitches closing the sewings, these could easily be stitched almost invisibly if required.I think it would make marvellous pelmet/valance panel over a window, door or bed with very little work.It measures 18" by 75" or 47cms by 1.9m. It is in excellent condition, just the following points to note, the front is quite faded when compared to the back, but still beautiful with a gorgeous antique patina, the gold metal thread has dulled to a deep bronze, and the above mentioned 'sewings' could be replaced. A low reserve reflects the quality of this antique textile.
