E. Gurley combined vernier compass with vernier transit attachment. Signed on the faded silvered 5" compass dial "W. & L.E. Gurley, Troy, N.Y." with four cardinal points and 3 1/2" needle (lacking locking bar) and twin right-angled spirit levels (intact). The inner silvered ring of the compass is divided into four 90 degree quadrants and there is an external vernier (+ or - 30 degrees and + or - 30 minutes of arc). The compass sits below a pair of offset uprights (sights) that are locked together with a special adapter mount to the vernier transit. The transit is 9" long and although all optics are intact, it is difficult to focus because of the faulty rack and pinion of the body tube. The cross hairs are also absent as is the large (5") bubble level that would have sat atop the transit tube. The object lens cap (1") is present as is the object lens (dirty-see photo). The fully divided 3 1/2" vertical circle sits behind the telescope and has a + or -30 minute vernier. The entire transit can be rotated through 360 degrees using a thumb lever with locking screw. The entire assembly sits atop a Jacob's staff mount with spring release/lock and screw, knurled cover to ball and socket joint above a modern white oak base measuring 7" in diameter. The entire instrument stands 12" tall and although all of its original lacquer has been lost, it has a wonderful brown patination to the brass. An excellent and rare combination of surveying instruments from the 1874 Gurley catalogue. It would be a fine decorator piece for the office desk, display case, etc. or a good parts instrument if you have another example missing some components. THIS IS A SEVEN DAY UNRESERVED AUCTION.
